Foujita, Tsuguharu
Japanese-French artist, a prominent figure of the 'École de Paris', known for his blend of Japanese technique and Western modernism.
Short Biography
Tsuguharu Foujita (later Léonard Foujita, 1886-1968) was a Japanese-French artist. He arrived in Paris in 1913 and became a celebrated and eccentric star of the 'École de Paris' in the 'Roaring Twenties'. A friend of Picasso, Modigliani, and Soutine, his style is a unique synthesis of traditional Japanese ink techniques (sumi-e) on a milky-white ground ('fond blanc d'ivoire') and Western modernism. He is best known for his delicate, linear nudes, cats, and portraits.
Connection to the Book World
Foujita was a master printmaker, particularly in etching and drypoint. His technique was extremely refined and linear. He illustrated 'livres d'artiste' for authors like Paul Morand and Pierre Loti. An important example is the 'Kistmappers' portfolio featuring etchings of nudes and cats, which perfectly demonstrate his unique style.
