Short Biography
François-Louis Schmied (1873-1941) was a Swiss-French artist, born in Geneva. He moved to Paris and became the most celebrated and luxurious producer of 'livres d'artiste' in the Art Deco period. He was a 'total artist' of the book: he designed the layout, engraved the woodcuts himself, printed the books on his own press, and often designed the spectacular bindings. His style is extremely refined, decorative, and modern, with a perfect mastery of the multi-color woodcut and the use of gold and silver.

Schmied's books are the pinnacle of Art Deco bibliophily. He illustrated classics like 'The Odyssey' and 'The Song of Songs', as well as texts by 'exotic' authors like Kipling ('The Jungle Book') and Mardrus ('One Thousand and One Nights'). His multi-color wood engravings are technically stunning. His work was aimed exclusively at the wealthiest collectors and is separate from the social and political agenda of the Dada or Surrealist movements.
