Kiesler, Frederick J.

An architect, artist, and theorist who explored the boundary between art and functionality in the avant-garde.

Short Biography

Kiesler, Frederick J. was born on May 3, 1890, in Czernowitz, Austria-Hungary. His work spanned architecture, theatre design, sculpture, and painting. He was closely associated with the European avant-garde, including De Stijl and Surrealism. Moving to the United States, he became an influential figure in New York, known for his 'Endless House' and his theoretical contributions on 'correalism'. His exhibition designs, such as the 'International Exhibition of Surrealism' in Paris in 1947, highlighted his relationship with the Surrealists. His legacy lies in the integration of all art forms into a holistic environment.

Connection to the Book World

As a graphic artist and designer, his work was less focused on books, but his influence was felt through exhibition design, which he considered a total artistic space. For the 1947 Surrealist exhibition in Paris, he designed the famous 'Chambre de Superstition' and the 'La ForĂȘt' installation, blurring the lines between architecture and graphic arts. His theoretical approach influenced how artworks were displayed in the post-war period.
