Frenaud, André was born on July 26, 1907, in Saint-Genis-sur-Oyonne, France. Although he was not part of an organized movement, his poetry is often associated with the modernist tradition and shows affinities with Surrealist thought. His first collection, 'Les Rois Mages', was published in 1943. He was a 'poet of being' who reflected on the human condition and world history. He collaborated with various artists for illustrated books. His work has had a lasting impact on post-war French poetry, bridging the gap between the classical and the experimental.

As a poet, his graphic work primarily focused on illustrated books in collaboration with leading artists. He worked with Raoul Ubac, among others, who illustrated his 'Le Testament' in 1955.
