Friesz, Émile Othon
A French landscape and marine painter who applied the vibrant colours of Fauvism to his powerful compositions.
Short Biography
Friesz, Émile Othon was born on February 6, 1879, in Le Havre, France. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he befriended Georges Braque and Raoul Dufy. Although he initially played a significant role in Fauvism (1905–1907), he later evolved towards a more classical and structured style, influenced by Cézanne's Post-Impressionism. This transition marks his search for a synthesis between the chromatic power of the avant-garde and traditional form. He continued to teach and exert influence within the School of Paris, and his work is an example of the many directions artists took after the initial shock of the avant-garde.

His graphic work consists of etchings, lithographs, and woodcuts, and includes illustrations for literary works, including classics and works by his contemporaries. The bold lines and strong contrast of early Fauvism are often visible in his black and white drawings. He made contributions to the world of illustrated books, with his work notably found in editions by Tériade and Skira.
