Short Biography
Galerie Simon was founded in 1914 in Paris, France, by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, succeeding his Galerie Kahnweiler (1907-1914). The gallery was one of the most important venues for the Cubist movement. Kahnweiler was the exclusive dealer for leading artists such as Picasso, Braque, Gris, and Léger. He played a crucial role in the recognition of early Cubism by exhibiting and selling their work. The gallery, which was renamed Galerie Louise Leiris in 1941, continued to promote the avant-garde and modern art.
Connection to the Book World
Kahnweiler's gallery was also a publishing house and played a key role in the world of illustrated books through the publication of 'livres d’artiste' (artist's books), including the crucial 'Saint Matorel' (1911) by Max Jacob with etchings by Picasso. He encouraged collaborations between Cubist artists and poets and used graphic techniques to disseminate the Cubist vocabulary. His editions are indispensable examples of the Cubist contribution to the illustrated book.
