Bertand, Gaston
A significant post-war Belgian painter who bridged the gap between analytical Cubism and lyrical Abstraction.
Short Biography
Bertand, Gaston was born on August 22, 1910, in Wonck, Belgium. He studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. His early work was influenced by Cubism, deconstructing objects and utilizing geometric structures. After World War II, his style evolved towards Abstract Art, maintaining a rigorous, architectural form, which made him a key figure in the post-war Belgian abstract movement. His work is characterized by a sober yet profound approach to colour and form. He is counted among the School of Paris and contributed to the renewal of modern art in Belgium.
Connection to the Book World
Bertand, Gaston contributed to the graphic arts in the form of lithographs and etchings, often in an abstract or semi-abstract style, in line with his painting. These graphic works were essential for disseminating his aesthetic in smaller, affordable editions. Although his illustrated books are less numerous, his prints are an important example of post-war Belgian abstract graphic art.
