Laurens, Henri
A French sculptor and graphic artist who belonged to the circle of the Cubists and collaborated with the avant-garde.
Short Biography
Laurens, Henri was born on March 29, 1885, in Paris, France. He started as a decorator but joined Cubism around 1911, influenced by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Laurens was one of the few sculptors who translated the principles of Cubism into three-dimensional works and collages. After World War I, his style evolved towards a more organic, yet still abstracted, figuration, characteristic of the School of Paris. His influence lies in the application of the avant-garde aesthetic to sculpture.

Laurens made a crucial contribution to 'livres d'artiste' in the Cubist tradition. He worked closely with his dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, who published the texts of avant-garde poets such as Max Jacob and Pierre Reverdy with Laurens's etchings and woodcuts.
