Hugnet, Georges

A Surrealist poet, essayist, and collage artist whose work was crucial to the dissemination of the movement.

Short Biography

Hugnet, Georges was born on March 11, 1906, in Paris, France. He joined André Breton's Surrealist group in 1926 and was one of the few members who combined poetry with visual art, notably through Surrealist collage. His early contributions were essential to the movement's theorization. He was also the editor of the influential art magazine 'Cahiers d'Art'. His work attests to the close link between the literary and visual branches of Surrealism.

Connection to the Book World

Hugnet was a central figure in Surrealist bibliophily. His books, such as 'Le Droit de Varech' (1930), are early examples of the Surrealist 'livre d'artiste'. He often used the collage technique and photomontage for illustration. As a publisher and writer, he collaborated with numerous avant-garde artists and publishers, making his oeuvre highly important for the illustrated book world.
