Sert, José-Maria was born on December 21, 1874, in Barcelona, Spain. He settled in Paris and became a prominent figure in the 'School of Paris' and the European art world. Although his style had a Baroque, decorative monumentality and he did not participate in the avant-garde experiments of Cubism or Dada, his role as a decorator and his network within the cultural elite was important. His work is representative of the more conservative, but luxurious, side of modern art.
