Kikoïne, Michel was born on May 27, 1892, in Gomel, Russian Empire. He moved to Paris in 1911 and became a prominent member of the Jewish School of Paris, along with Soutine and Chagall. His work, characterized by thick brushstrokes and dark, intense colors, has strong Expressionist features. Although he did not formally belong to an avant-garde movement, he belongs to the Modernism that laid the foundation for post-war European art.
