Seligmann, Kurt
A Swiss painter, printmaker, and theorist, who belonged to the core of the international Surrealist movement.
Short Biography
Seligmann, Kurt was born on July 20, 1900, in Basel, Switzerland. He studied in Basel, Paris, and Florence. After initially working abstractly, he joined the Surrealists in Paris in 1937. He fled to New York in 1939 and became a central figure of Surrealism in exile there. His work, characterized by a fantastic, occult, and anthropomorphic figuration, was an important contribution to the Surrealist aesthetic. He was also a respected scholar of magical art.
