Lambert, Jean-Clarence
French poet, art critic, and theorist, who helped define and disseminate the work of post-war abstract artists.
Short Biography
Lambert, Jean-Clarence was born on October 29, 1930, in Paris, France. He was an influential critic and poet in the post-war period. He was close to the abstract artists of the 'Nouvelle École de Paris' (such as Cobra and Art Informel) and was a key figure in the theoretical debate on abstract expression. He wrote extensively about artists such as Corneille, Appel, and Soulages. His work illustrates the avant-garde's shift from Surrealism to abstraction.
Connection to the Book World
As a poet and critic, Lambert contributed to numerous illustrated books and graphic editions (portfolios) through his introductory texts and poetry. He collaborated with post-war abstract artists on 'livres d'artiste', where the spontaneous expression of the graphics engaged in a visual dialogue with his poetry.
