Lely, Gilbert was born on March 27, 1904, in Paris, France. He was a Surrealist poet, although his work often had a more sensual and mythological focus than that of the Breton group. His poetry and prose explored the themes of eroticism, mythology, and the subversive power of desire. He was an important independent voice in Surrealist and post-Surrealist literature.
