Fini, Leonor was born on August 17, 1907, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She settled in Paris in the 1930s and became a leading figure in the Surrealist movement, although she remained independent of André Breton. Her work is characterized by an obsession with androgynous figures, sphinxes, and a fantastic, occult theatricality. She was also an influential costume and set designer. Her art is a crucial example of the female perspective within Surrealism.
