Magritte, René]

A Belgian painter, one of the most prominent figures of Surrealism, known for his enigmatic and conceptual works.

Short Biography

René Magritte was born on November 21, 1898, in Lessines, Belgium. After a childhood marked by his mother's suicide, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. His early work was influenced by Cubism and Futurism, but he joined the Belgian Surrealist group in 1926. He lived in Paris from 1927 to 1930 and associated with André Breton, Max Ernst, and Salvador Dalí. His art, which places everyday objects in unusual contexts ('La Trahison des images' - 'This is not a pipe'), explores the relationship between the object, the word, and the image, challenging the viewer about the nature of reality and representation. Magritte's 'Surrealism in broad daylight' ('Vache' period) and his later 'period of light' underscore his constant renewal within Surrealism.

Connection to the Book World

Magritte's contribution to the illustrated book and graphic work is conceptual and consistent with his painting, although less voluminous than some of his peers. He notably illustrated texts by his Surrealist friends, such as Paul Éluard and Marcel Mariën. His work in this context mainly consists of drawings and etchings, often featuring the same enigmatic images and play on language and image as his famous paintings, thus confirming the coherence of his Surrealist project across all media.
