Mallarmé, Stéphane]

An influential French poet and critic, considered one of the founders of Symbolism and a precursor to modern poetry and typographical experiments.

Short Biography

Stéphane Mallarmé was born on March 18, 1842, in Paris, and died on September 9, 1898, in Valvins, France. Although he was an English teacher for most of his life, he devoted himself to a poetry that revolutionized the understanding of language itself. A central figure of Symbolism, he exerted an enormous influence on literature, painting, and music. His weekly gatherings, 'les Mardis', were a meeting point for the avant-garde of his time, including Paul Valéry and André Gide. His quest for the Absolute, his use of suggestion over description, and especially his formal experiments such as in 'Un coup de dés jamais n'abolira le Hasard' (1897), where typography and layout play a crucial role in the meaning, mark him as a precursor to the modernist avant-garde.

Connection to the Book World

Mallarmé's work is fundamental to the evolution of the illustrated book. His most famous contribution, 'Un coup de dés jamais n'abolira le Hasard' (1897), is a groundbreaking typographical poem that transformed the page into a visual and musical playground, paving the way for future avant-garde typographical experiments in the illustrated book, notably in Futurism and Dadaism. Another important example is his 'L'Après-midi d'un faune' (1876), illustrated with etchings by Édouard Manet, a classic early example of the 'livre de peintre'.
