Man Ray]

An American artist who was a key figure in both Dadaism and Surrealism, renowned for his pioneering and experimental contributions to photography.

Short Biography

Man Ray was born Emmanuel Radnitzky on August 27, 1890, in Philadelphia, USA, and died on November 18, 1976, in Paris. His career spanned the ocean, making him a central figure in the avant-garde movements in both New York (Dada) and Paris (Dada and Surrealism). From 1913, he worked in New York, where he developed American Dadaism alongside Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia. He moved to Paris in 1921, quickly becoming one of the most valued photographers of the Surrealists. He experimented with techniques such as the 'rayograph' (photogram) and solarization. His work, often combining humor, the unexpected, and the mechanical, reflected the Surrealist obsession with the subconscious and dreamlike imagery, bridging modernist art movements.

Connection to the Book World

Man Ray's photographic work and 'rayographs' (direct prints without a camera) were frequently published in Surrealist magazines and books, expanding the graphic possibilities of photography for the avant-garde. His edition 'Champs délicieux' (1922) featuring rayographs and a preface by Tristan Tzara is a major Dada-Surrealist 'livre d'artiste'. He also illustrated Marcel Duchamp's 'The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even' (1934) and worked on other publications in collaboration with Surrealist poets, confirming his central role in the visual and typographical experiments of Surrealism.
