Mariën, Marcel]

A Belgian writer, poet, artist, and publisher who embodied the spirit of Belgian Surrealism, known for his provocative and humorous actions.

Short Biography

Marcel Mariën was born on April 29, 1920, in Antwerp, Belgium, and died on September 19, 1993, in Brussels. From the age of sixteen, he was part of the Belgian Surrealist group around René Magritte, with whom he was friends and collaborated. Mariën was a versatile figure: poet, essayist, photographer, filmmaker, and creator of 'détournements' and Surrealist objects. His work and life were dedicated to challenging social conventions and the perception of art, in the spirit of the most radical Surrealism. Although his work largely falls after the classic avant-garde period, he remained faithful to the Surrealist principles of André Breton and Belgian Surrealism, with a constant focus on humor and subversion.

Connection to the Book World

As a Surrealist and publisher, Marcel Mariën played a role in the production of books in the Surrealist tradition. He published his own writings, such as 'La Table rase' (1952) and 'Les Corrections naturelles' (1947), as well as those of others through his own, often short-lived, publishing ventures. His publications often had a humorous and subversive tone, consistent with his artistry. Although less known for luxurious 'livres d'artiste', his work demonstrates a lasting commitment to the Surrealist aesthetic in the printed medium.
