Marinetti, Filippo Tommaso]

An Italian poet, theorist, and radical activist, the founder of Futurism, the first and most aggressive Italian avant-garde movement.

Short Biography

Filippo Tommaso Marinetti was born on December 22, 1876, in Alexandria, Egypt, and died on December 2, 1944, in Bellagio, Italy. He shook the art world by publishing the 'Manifesto of Futurism' in 'Le Figaro' on February 20, 1909. This manifesto rejected tradition and glorified the modern machine aesthetic, speed, technology, and violence. Marinetti urged artists to capture the dynamism and energy of modern life and was the inventor of 'Parole in libertà' (words in freedom), a concept that demolished traditional syntax and typography. His influence was crucial for the development of other early avant-garde movements, including Dadaism and Constructivism. His political beliefs led to a later association of Futurism with Italian Fascism.

Connection to the Book World

Marinetti's main contribution to the illustrated book lies in his typographical revolution of 'Parole in libertà', which transformed the page into a visual and dynamic battlefield. His publications, such as 'Zang Tumb Tumb' (1914) and the many Futurist manifestos, were themselves the epitome of the Futurist 'livre d'artiste', using various fonts, sizes, and directions to evoke the sounds and movements of modern warfare and urban life. These experiments were fundamental to the modernist avant-garde and influenced book art far beyond Italy.
