Matisse, Henri]

An influential French painter, sculptor, and graphic artist, known as the leader of Fauvism and a master of color and form in modern art.

Short Biography

Henri Matisse was born on December 31, 1869, in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France, and died on November 3, 1954, in Nice. Initially influenced by Impressionism, he became the leader of Fauvism (Wild Beasts) in 1905, characterized by the radical, unfettered use of pure, unnatural color. After Fauvism, Matisse remained a central figure in modern art, developing a style marked by simplicity of form, clarity of line, and an emphasis on decorative harmony ('La Danse', 'L'Atelier Rouge'). From the late 1940s, when his health forced him to stop painting, he created his famous paper 'découpages' (cut-outs), breaking the boundaries between painting and sculpture. His quest for expression through color and composition, as well as his influence on abstract art, make him a master of Modernism.

Connection to the Book World

Matisse is one of the most prolific and important artists of the 20th-century 'livre d'artiste'. His graphic work, which culminated in the technique of the simple, fluid line, includes etchings, woodcuts, aquatints, and lithographs. Crucial works are 'Poésies' by Mallarmé (Skira, 1932), with 29 etchings, capturing the essence of his graphic style, and 'Jazz' (Tériade, 1947), a groundbreaking book featuring 'découpages' (colored cut-outs) used as printing stencils. These books, along with others for Tériade and Skira, are milestones of the illustrated book.
