Matta, Roberto]

A Chilean painter and architect, a major second-generation Surrealist, known for his large-scale, cosmic, and psycho-morphological landscapes.

Short Biography

Roberto Matta Echaurren was born on November 11, 1911, in Santiago, Chile, and died on November 23, 2002, in Civitavecchia, Italy. After studying architecture, he moved to Europe in 1934 and met influential figures such as Le Corbusier, Salvador Dalí, and André Breton. He joined the Surrealist group in 1937 and introduced the concept of 'psychological morphologies', large abstract paintings that sought to capture the state of the subconscious or 'fourth dimension'. During World War II, he moved to New York and influenced the nascent Abstract Expressionist school with his emphasis on automatic processes and the use of large formats. His work is characterized by a fusion of abstraction and figuration in a cosmic perspective, true to the Surrealist quest for inner exploration.

Connection to the Book World

Matta made a significant contribution to the graphic arts, notably through etchings, aquatints, and lithographs for illustrated books in the Surrealist tradition. He often collaborated with prominent poets, including André Breton, and published with editors such as Skira and Georges Visat. His books are distinguished by an explosion of lines and colors, translating his vision of 'psycho-morphological' landscapes into the printed medium. These editions are important for the late Surrealist 'livre d'artiste'.
