Maupassant, Guy de]

A famous French novelist and short story writer of the 19th century, considered a master of Realism and Naturalism.

Short Biography

Guy de Maupassant, born on August 5, 1850, at Château de Miromesnil, Normandy, and died on July 6, 1893, in Paris, was one of the most important writers of French Realism and Naturalism. Under the tutelage of Gustave Flaubert, he was part of the 'Groupe de Médan' around Émile Zola. His novel 'Bel-Ami' (1885) and his many short stories ('Boule de Suif', 'Le Horla') are characterized by precise observation of society, human psychology, and a sometimes pessimistic tone. Although he worked before the major avant-garde movements, his concern for raw, unvarnished reality and his influence on literature laid the groundwork for later, more radical approaches in the 20th century.

Connection to the Book World

As one of the most popular writers of the late 19th century, Maupassant's works were frequently illustrated and published in luxurious editions. The illustrations in these editions were generally figurative and in the fin de siècle style, with no direct link to the avant-garde. However, his work was reissued and reinterpreted by later avant-garde artists and publishers (e.g., the erotic undertones in some of his stories), thus providing the literary foundation for the 'livre d'artiste'.
