Eliot, Charles Louis Maurice]

A French painter, pastellist, and graphic artist from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, bridging Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism.

Short Biography

Charles Louis Maurice Eliot was born on September 9, 1862, in Paris, and died on August 21, 1945, in Épinay-sous-Sénart, France. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts, he was associated with Post-Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, known for his landscapes and genre scenes. He often used divided touches of color, a technique he adopted from the Impressionists, but with an emphasis on decorative harmony and line. Although not directly part of the radical avant-garde of Cubism or Surrealism, his work in the graphic arts and his collaboration with Ambroise Vollard in the early 20th century are significant for the transition to modern art.

Connection to the Book World

As a pastellist, engraver, and illustrator, Maurice Eliot made a notable contribution to the illustrated books of his time. In 1897, the influential art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard commissioned a color lithograph from him for his 'Album d'estampes originales', marking a step towards promoting the graphic work of modern artists. Eliot's work for books, often in the atmosphere of Symbolism and Art Nouveau, emphasized a fluid line and harmonious composition, linking him to the early 'livre de peintre' tradition.
