Dethomas, Maxime]

A French painter, draughtsman, and decorator of Post-Impressionism, notable for his friendship with Toulouse-Lautrec and Vuillard.

Short Biography

Maxime Dethomas was born on October 13, 1867, in Garges-lès-Gonesse, France, and died on January 21, 1929, in Paris. From an affluent family, he moved in the Parisian intellectual and artistic circles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, notably befriending Toulouse-Lautrec and Édouard Vuillard (Nabis). Dethomas is associated with Post-Impressionism and exhibited his works, mainly pastels and drawings, in salons such as the Salon d'Automne, which he co-founded. His oeuvre includes portraits, urban scenes, and theatre sets. Although he worked before the rise of the radical avant-garde, his style is characterized by a sober yet penetrating observation of daily life, placing him at the heart of artistic Modernism.

Connection to the Book World

Dethomas contributed to the renaissance of book production in France in the early 20th century, in the tradition of the 'livre de luxe' aesthetic. He was a prolific illustrator and engraver, working for works by authors such as Paul Claudel ('Tête d'or', 1920) and Rudyard Kipling ('La Plus Belle Histoire du Monde', 1919), often in a sober yet elegant style characteristic of his painting. His work as an illustrator is important for the transition from the 19th-century illustrated novel to the 20th-century 'livre de peintre'.
