Henri Michaux was born on May 24, 1899, in Namur, Belgium, and died on October 19, 1984, in Paris. He was a writer and artist of Belgian origin, naturalized French in 1955. Although he befriended key figures of Surrealism (like André Breton) and was in contact with the group, he refused to become a formal member, maintaining his independence. His work is a profound exploration of inner existence, anguish, and the effects of mescaline. His paintings and drawings, often made with ink, evolved into an 'écriture' or 'stain' related to Abstract Expressionism and Art Informel ('Mouvements', 1952). Michaux is an essential figure in Modernism for his radical synthesis of literary and visual art.
