Mistral, Frederic]

A French poet who wrote in Provençal, the founder of the Félibrige movement and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1904.

Short Biography

Frédéric Mistral was born on September 8, 1830, in Maillane, France, and died there on March 25, 1914. He was an advocate for the Provençal language and culture. In 1854, he founded the 'Félibrige', a movement dedicated to the revival of the Provençal language and literature. His epic poem 'Mirèio' (1859) made him internationally famous. His work, often rooted in Romanticism, focused on capturing the beauty and traditions of Provence. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1904. Although he worked before the 20th-century avant-garde, his regionalist, culturally revolutionary project was in its own way a form of avant-garde in the context of French literary history.

Connection to the Book World

As a major literary figure of the 19th century, Mistral's works were often published in luxury editions, usually with illustrations in the traditional, idealized style of Romanticism and Regionalism. His work is important for the 'livre de luxe' and the revival of Provençal printing traditions. Although not directly connected to the typographical and artistic revolutions of the 20th-century avant-garde, these editions formed the cultural context within which later innovations occurred.
