Poquelin, Jean-Baptiste]

A leading French playwright, actor, and company director of 17th-century Classicism, famous for his satirical comedies.

Short Biography

Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known as Molière, was born in 1622 in Paris, and died there on February 17, 1673. He is the undisputed master of French comedy and one of the most important playwrights in world literature. Molière's work, which is part of French Classicism, is a satirical and critical representation of human nature and the society of his time ('Le Misanthrope', 'Tartuffe'). Although he worked in the 17th century, his significance for the avant-garde lies in the fact that 20th-century avant-gardists (such as Alfred Jarry with 'Ubu Roi') often challenged and parodied classical drama and classical figures. Modern art challenged the tradition that Molière's status embodied in French culture, making him a symbol of the authority to be 'diminished'.

Connection to the Book World

Molière's plays, following the classical tradition, were frequently published in richly illustrated and luxurious editions in the 20th century. These editions, often featuring engravings and illustrations in the style of the 18th century (such as by Moreau le Jeune, whose work is on this list) or illustrations by modern artists like Maurice Leloir, illustrate the continuity of the French literary and bibliophile tradition, although they are not directly connected to the avant-garde revolutions in book art.
