Short Biography
Jean-Michel Moreau, known as Moreau le Jeune (the younger), was born on March 26, 1741, in Paris, and died there on November 30, 1814. He was a master of etching and engraving and one of the most important illustrators of the Rococo and Neoclassicism. His most famous works are the series 'Monument du Costume' and 'Suite d'estampes pour servir à l'histoire des mœurs et du costume des François au dix-huitième siècle', which form an invaluable chronicle of French society and fashion. Although he worked centuries before the avant-garde, his work was rediscovered and appreciated by bibliophiles in the late 19th century. His mastery of line and composition influenced later illustrators of the 19th and early 20th centuries who sought to revive the tradition of the quality illustrated book.

Moreau le Jeune's contribution to the illustrated book in the 18th century is legendary, and his work was a benchmark for classical book illustration. He illustrated important editions of Ovid, Rousseau, and Voltaire, among others.
