Paul van Ostaijen was born on February 22, 1896, in Antwerp, Belgium. He was a central figure in the Flemish literary renewal of the early 20th century. His work evolved from romantic Symbolism to Expressionism and Dada, influenced by his stay in Berlin after World War I. He experimented with typography and poetry in the manner of the Avant-Garde, resulting in his characteristic 'pure lyricism' and 'grotesques'. He aimed for a modern, cosmopolitan art detached from traditional conventions. His work, such as 'Bezette Stad' (1921), is a radical example of typographical and literary Expressionism/Dada, and exerted a lasting influence on Dutch and Flemish poetry.
