Péret, Benjamin

A French poet and writer who was a central figure in both Dada and Surrealism, known for his humor and political activism.

Short Biography

Benjamin Péret was born on July 4, 1899, in Rezé, France. After World War I, he became involved in the Parisian Dada movement and was one of the co-founders of Surrealism in 1924, alongside André Breton. He was a fervent advocate of 'automatic' writing and was known for his subversive and humorous poetry. His political beliefs led to his involvement in the Trotskyist movement. Péret was one of the most radical and uncompromising figures of Surrealism, introducing the movement to Brazil and Mexico through his exile. His constant commitment to the liberation of the spirit and society made him an archetypal Avant-Garde figure.

Connection to the Book World

Péret's poetry is a perfect illustration of Surrealist literary techniques. His texts were often published in Surrealist magazines and in 'livres d'artiste' illustrated by Surrealist artists such as Max Ernst. His work 'Dormir, dormir dans les pierres' was illustrated with etchings by Picasso, emphasizing the symbiosis between the Avant-Garde poet and artist.
