Picabia, Francis

A French painter and poet who was a key figure in Dadaism and Surrealism and constantly changed his style.

Short Biography

Francis Picabia was born on January 22, 1879, in Paris, France. His early work ranged from Impressionism to Cubism, before he became one of the most radical and influential figures in Dadaism. His 'machinomorph' drawings from the New York Dada period (c. 1915) are iconic. Later, he joined Surrealism and became known for his 'Transparencies,' where multiple figurative images are overlaid. Picabia's work is characterized by constant artistic and stylistic metamorphosis, making him one of the most unpredictable and Avant-Garde artists of his time. His magazines, such as '391,' were crucial for the dissemination of Dada and Surrealist ideas.

Connection to the Book World

Picabia's influence on the illustrated book lies primarily in his contribution to Dadaist and Surrealist publications. His graphic work and mechanical drawings are found in his own magazine '391,' and he worked on various projects that broke the boundaries of traditional book illustration. His early Cubist illustrations for 'Poèmes et Dessins de la Fille Née Sans Mère' (1918) show his early Avant-Garde commitment.
