Marcel (1899-1971) and Gabriel (1904-1940) Piqueray were two Brussels brothers and poets who were members of the Belgian Surrealist group, led by Paul Nougé and René Magritte. They were known for their 'black humor,' a characteristic of Belgian Surrealism, and their critical attitude towards bourgeois culture. They published in Surrealist magazines and contributed to the theory and practice of the movement in Belgium. Their collaborative work is an illustration of the collective aspect of Surrealism, which often placed the individual author in the background. Gabriel's early death marked the end of their collaboration.
