Prévert, Jacques
A very popular French poet, screenwriter, and collagist, whose work combined humor and Surrealism with political and social engagement.
Short Biography
Jacques Prévert was born on February 4, 1900, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. He joined the Surrealists in 1925, where he was known for his subversive humor and his disdain for the bourgeois establishment. Although he later distanced himself from the formal group around Breton, his poetry ('Paroles', 1946) remained infused with the Surrealist spirit. His accessible yet critical and unconventional style made him one of the most beloved poets of his time. His work, which also includes film scripts (such as 'Les Enfants du Paradis') and collages, brought the Avant-Garde aesthetic to a wide audience.
Connection to the Book World
Prévert's poetry was often illustrated by his friends, including Surrealist and modern artists such as Picasso, Miró, and Jacques Villon. His collages are in themselves a contribution to Avant-Garde graphic art.
