Prassinos, Mario
A Greek-French painter and graphic artist whose work spanned Expressionism, Surrealism, and post-war Lyrical Abstraction.
Short Biography
Mario Prassinos was born on February 12, 1916, in Istanbul (then Ottoman Empire, now Turkey) and emigrated to France in 1922. He befriended Surrealists such as André Breton and Paul Éluard, and his early work showed influences of Surrealism and Dada. After World War II, his style evolved towards Lyrical Abstraction, with an emphasis on organic forms and an expressive, almost calligraphic line. His later work, particularly his series on olive trees and landscapes, shows a unique synthesis of abstraction and figuration. Although he later distanced himself from Surrealism, his work maintained an emotional and subversive Avant-Garde spirit.

Prassinos was a prolific illustrator and graphic artist, creating woodcuts, lithographs, and etchings for numerous books. He illustrated works by Arthur Rimbaud and Jean-Paul Sartre, among others. His graphic work in the style of Surrealist and Abstract Expressionist techniques is a significant contribution to the post-war 'livre d'artiste'.
