Schmied, François-Louis

A Swiss-French master wood engraver, printer, and publisher, renowned for his luxurious, Art Deco illustrated books.

Short Biography

François-Louis Schmied was born on November 8, 1873, in Geneva, Switzerland, and later became a naturalized Frenchman. He was one of the most influential figures in Art Deco book production. From 1920, he established his own workshop in Paris, where he worked with his son Théo on extremely refined, limited editions. Although his style operated within Art Deco, an aesthetic often seen as 'luxury modernism,' and was not the radical break of Dada or Surrealism, his technical innovation in wood engraving and typography was of great importance to modern book art. His work displays a perfect synthesis of text, typography, and image in the spirit of the 'livre d'artiste'.

Connection to the Book World

Schmied's workshops are famous for the technical perfection of their illustrated books. His books, such as 'Le Cantique des Cantiques' (1925), were entirely handcrafted and were masterpieces of colored wood engraving, with an unprecedented richness of detail and color. His work represents the peak of the Art Deco contribution to the 'livre d'artiste'.
