Schwartz, Arturo

An Italian art historian, poet, gallery owner, and the most eminent expert on Dada and Surrealism.

Short Biography

Arturo Schwartz was born on February 3, 1924, in Alexandria, Egypt. He was a central figure in post-war Surrealist circles and opened his gallery in Milan in 1954. He became one of the most important collectors, promoters, and publishers of Dada and Surrealist art, particularly the work of Marcel Duchamp, whose 'catalogue raisonné' he compiled. Schwartz wrote under the pseudonym Tristan Sauvage and was a poet himself. His role in the Avant-Garde was that of a critical facilitator and historian who systematized and kept alive the legacy of the early movements through exhibitions and publications.

Connection to the Book World

Schwartz's gallery and publishing house were crucial for post-war Surrealist 'livres d'artiste'. He published texts and graphic works by artists with ties to Dada and Surrealism and wrote authoritative books on their graphic oeuvre. His precise catalogs and publications are invaluable for the study of Surrealist book art.
