Takiguchi, Shuzo

A Japanese poet, critic, and artist, the central figure in the introduction and development of Surrealism in Japan.

Short Biography

Shuzo Takiguchi was born on December 6, 1903, in Tokyo, Japan. He was one of the most influential figures in the Japanese Avant-Garde. He was the main translator and promoter of Surrealism and Dada in Japan, starting from the late '20s. He maintained correspondence with André Breton and other Surrealists in Paris. His own poetry and theoretical writings on the movements were crucial for the formation of the Japanese Surrealist group. Takiguchi's role as an Avant-Garde facilitator and poet was of international importance, linking the European and Japanese modernist movements.

Connection to the Book World

Takiguchi's work was often published in experimental and Avant-Garde magazines in Japan, employing typographic experiments. His poetry and essays were also included in Western publications. He collaborated with Japanese and international artists for the illustration of his texts and designed the layout of his own poetry collections.
