Short Biography
Toyen (real name: Marie Čermínová) was born on September 24, 1902, in Prague (then Austria-Hungary). She adopted the name Toyen to emphasize her androgynous, non-binary identity. She was a co-founder of the Czech Surrealist group and moved to Paris in 1947, joining the French Surrealists. Her paintings and drawings are dreamlike, erotic, and often unsettling, with a unique iconography focused on desire and repression. Toyen's work was Avant-Garde in its radical experiments with Surrealist automatism and its commitment to the liberation of sexuality and identity.

Toyen made important contributions to the Surrealist illustrated book. Her drawings and graphic works (etchings, lithographs) appeared in Surrealist magazines and 'livres d'artiste', often illustrating the erotic and subversive texts of her fellow Surrealists.
