Edgard Tytgat was born on April 28, 1879, in Brussels, Belgium. He started in a Post-Impressionist style but developed a personal form of Expressionism after World War I, often associated with the Brabant Fauvists. His work is characterized by a naive, colorful, and narrative style, with intimate scenes of daily life or childlike dreams. He belonged to the group of Flemish Expressionists around the magazine 'Sélection', an important Avant-Garde publication in Belgium. His work was Avant-Garde in its rejection of academic norms and its simple, direct expression.
