Tzara, Tristan

A Romanian-French poet and essayist, the founder of the Dada movement and a key figure in Surrealism.

Short Biography

Tristan Tzara (real name: Samuel Rosenstock) was born on April 16, 1896, in Moinești, Romania. He was the central figure in the founding of Dada in Zurich in 1916. His manifestos, poetry, and organizational talent were crucial for the dissemination of the anti-art and anti-rational Dada aesthetic. After the Dada period, he joined the Surrealists in Paris, although his relationship with André Breton was often strained. Tzara's consistently radical stance and his experiments with language and typography made him the most consistent figure of the early literary Avant-Garde.

Connection to the Book World

Tzara's contribution to the illustrated book is essential for Dada and Surrealist typography. His poetry collections and manifestos were often printed with radical typographic layouts and illustrated by Dadaist artists like Jean Arp and Max Ernst, defining the book itself as a dynamic art object. An example is 'Vingt-cinq poèmes' (1918) with woodcuts by Jean Arp.
