van Dongen, Kees
A Dutch painter, famous for his vibrant portraits of women and his membership in the Fauves.
Short Biography
Kees van Dongen was born on January 26, 1877, in Delfshaven, Netherlands. He moved to Paris in 1897 and became a member of the **Fauves** in 1905 (with Matisse and Derain). His work, characterized by a bold, expressive use of color and a sketchy, dynamic brushwork, was Avant-Garde in its focus on the modern, urban, and sometimes decadent lifestyle. Although the Fauves were a short-lived movement, their revolutionary use of color was a crucial step in the development of modern art and the Avant-Garde. Van Dongen's work in the 1910s and 1920s defined the Parisian 'Roaring Twenties' aesthetic.
Connection to the Book World
Van Dongen was an important graphic artist and illustrator for magazines and books, often in his expressive, **Fauvist style**. He contributed to the **'livre d'artiste'**, such as his illustrations for Anatole France's 'Le Jardin d'Épicure' (1924) and his contributions to the luxurious bibliophile editions of the 1920s.
