Short Biography
Bram van Velde was born on October 19, 1895, in Zoeterwoude-Rijndijk, Netherlands. He settled in Paris in the 1920s, where he was part of the École de Paris. His work, which only gained recognition late in his career, is a very personal and intense form of **Abstract Expressionism**. He worked with bright, unmixed colors and bold, overlapping forms that seem to struggle at the edges of the canvas. Although his work emerged after the classical Avant-Garde, his radical and autonomous approach to abstract painting continued the ideals of the Avant-Garde in a new, existential way.
