Tanguy, Yves

A prominent French-American painter, known for his desolate Surrealist landscapes filled with strange objects.

Short Biography

Yves Tanguy was born on January 5, 1900, in Paris, France. After a brief career in the merchant marine and the army, he accidentally discovered a painting by Giorgio de Chirico in 1923 that changed his life. He quickly joined the Parisian Avant-Garde and became one of the most dedicated members of **Surrealism** around André Breton in 1925. Tanguy developed a unique style featuring seemingly endless, airy landscapes populated by amorphous, whimsical bio-morphic forms, often painted with obsessive precision. The objects appear to defy the laws of physics. During World War II, he emigrated to the US, where he became a US citizen in 1948 and experienced his most productive period.

Connection to the Book World

Tanguy was an important illustrator of Surrealist texts, with his graphic work, such as **etchings** and **lithographs**, evoking the same dreamlike, desolate worlds as his paintings. He contributed to Surrealist magazines and to **'livres d'artiste'**, his visual language forming a perfect complement to the poetry of his Surrealist colleagues.
