Zadkine, Ossip
A Belarusian-born French sculptor who applied the principles of Cubism to the human figure.

Ossip Zadkine was born on July 14, 1888, in Vitebsk, Belarus (then Russian Empire). He settled in Paris in 1910 and joined the Avant-Garde artists of Montparnasse. He was one of the first to apply the principles of **Cubism** to sculpture, reducing the human figure to geometric forms and playing with concave and convex surfaces. His work is expressive and dynamic, combining primitive qualities with formal modernist experiments. Zadkine's international triumph came in the post-war period, with his famous monument 'The Destroyed City' (1953) in Rotterdam.
