Zao, Wou-Ki

Short Biography
Zao Wou-Ki was born on February 13, 1920, in Beijing (or Shanghai), China. He settled in Paris in 1948. His early work was figurative, but after meeting Parisian artists (such as Nicolas de Staël and Pierre Soulages), his style quickly evolved toward **lyrical abstraction**. He is associated with post-war **'Art Informel'** and **Abstract Expressionism**. His paintings are large-scale, energetic canvases that combine the abstract and spiritual qualities of Chinese calligraphy with the texture and gesture of Western abstract art. Zao's work was Avant-Garde in its successful fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics.
