Biographie d’André Breton, poète

SKU BIOG-001

This exceptional copy of Biographie d’André Breton, poète brings several strands of the twentieth-century avant-garde into a single tangible object. Fernando Arrabal writes on André Breton, the poet and theorist who gave Surrealism both its programme and its myth. Julius Baltazar contributes an original graphic work, while Daniel Knoderer radically transforms the book in 1993 into a sculptural binding. The volume therefore moves beyond bibliophile publication into the realm of the livre-objet: text, image, construction and performance at once. Bright colours, bolts, plastic plates, collage fragments and painted inscriptions turn the binding into an autonomous sculptural statement. The copy is also bibliographically intriguing because the normal justification leaf is absent and replaced by Knoderer’s handwritten confirmation. The designation Exemplaire OOO gives the volume an irregular but strongly conceptual status. For The Hidden Page, it is a compelling example of literature, printmaking, book art and avant-garde practice converging in one object.

Biographie d’André Breton, poète
1983 | Nice | Matarasso, Jacques
A rare and conceptually powerful copy in which Breton, Arrabal, Baltazar and Knoderer meet within a single object. Its bibliographical irregularity is not incidental, but part of its meaning. As a livre-objet, it holds an exceptional place in a collection devoted to Surrealism, book art and the post-war avant-garde.

Product DETAIL

Arrabal’s text is a brief literary biography of André Breton, poet, essayist and central figure of Surrealism. The work presents Breton as an intellectual presence: his poetic authority, his role within the avant-garde and the lasting force of his name. It is not an exhaustive scholarly biography, but a concentrated homage in which life-writing and literary imagination stand close together. Breton appears as a point where poetry, manifesto, revolt and artistic friendships converge. The edition is strengthened by Baltazar’s original engraving, which gives the text a graphic counter-voice. In this copy, Knoderer’s binding further changes the reading experience: Breton is approached not only through words, but through a vivid constructed object. Its thematic centre lies in the continuation of an avant-garde spirit: homage, rupture, play and material freedom.

L'arbre descend du singe
Bédouin, Jean-Louis · Hallart, Guy
L'arbre descend du singe

L'Arbre descend du singe is a beautifully illustrated edition that highlights the collaboration between the poet Jean-Louis Bedouin and the artist Guy Hallart. The work, published in a limited edition, is characterized by a rich dialogue between poetry and image, where the visual compositions reflect the dreamy and often cryptic nature of Bedouin's texts. The book is a tangible testament to the artistic symbiosis between the two creators and offers a unique insight into a creative dialogue from the mid-1970s.

Arriver à se réveiller
Michaux, Henri · Bettencourt, Pierre
Arriver à se réveiller

A rare first edition of Arriver à se réveiller, written by Henri Michaux in the tremulous post-war years. The text unfolds as an inward journey toward lucidity, where sleep and waking mirror each other. Printed and published by Pierre Bettencourt in his own workshop, the edition’s small run preserves the work’s intimacy. The title-page vignette, a linocut by Bettencourt, sets a spare, rhythmic visual key that amplifies Michaux’s vigilant, vulnerable tone. This copy is handsomely bound in brown morocco with balsa boards by Miguet, a tactile nod to lightness under tension. For bibliophiles, it is an exemplary union of poetry, craft, and experiment. The volume embodies the independence of the post-war small press and Michaux’s radical sensitivity.

Arrière-histoire du poème pulvérisé
Char, Rene · Stael, Nicolas de
Arrière-histoire du poème pulvérisé

*Arrière-histoire du poème pulvérisé* is a later illustrated edition of a key text in which René Char looks back on the genesis and inner background of *Le Poème pulvérisé*. Published in 1972 by Imprimerie Union, it opens with a colour frontispiece by Nicolas de Staël. The pairing of Char and de Staël is especially charged: two post-war voices, each seeking concentration, clarity, and rupture in his own medium. This copy is one of only six hors commerce copies on Arches and is signed. The autograph presentation inscription to Doctor Marcel Zara, with poetic quotation and October 1972 dating, makes it a deeply personal copy.

The Fragile Meaning of ‘Complet’

In auction descriptions, “complete” often sounds reassuring — but it is only meaningful when verified against the colophon, the justification, and the bibliography. For The Hidden Page, clarity begins where vague market language ends.
