L’Antichambre de la nature

SKU LANT-001

*L’Antichambre de la nature* is an early and important book in the dialogue between Alain Jouffroy’s poetic writing and Wifredo Lam’s visionary visual language. It appeared in 1966 as the first volume of the *Paroles peintes* series, a collection that treated the meeting between poet and artist as an autonomous book form. Lam illustrated the work with nine original etchings, including an initial, giving the volume the intensity of a graphic ensemble rather than that of a merely illustrated text. Jouffroy’s title suggests a threshold space: not nature itself, but its antechamber, where forms, forces and metamorphoses prepare themselves. Lam’s hybrid universe, with its vegetal, animal and human resonances, answers this idea with exceptional precision. This copy is one of the 50 numbered examples on Rives B.F.K., signed by both author and artist. As the first volume of *Paroles peintes*, it also has a programmatic importance for a whole line of French artist’s books of the 1960s.

Product DETAIL

The book consists of a poetic text by Alain Jouffroy, surrounded and traversed by nine original etchings by Wifredo Lam. It offers no conventional plot with characters or action; its centre is a lyrical and visual exploration of nature as a field of forces. Jouffroy approaches nature not descriptively or pastorally, but as a zone of tension, metamorphosis and inner experience. The title places the reader in an antechamber, a preliminary space where visible forms are not yet fully fixed and where the organic appears almost ritually. Lam’s etchings give that space bodies, signs and hybrid apparitions, as if nature itself were producing masks and symbols. The alternation of text and image makes the reading slow and ceremonial: each page becomes a passage between language and vision. The work is therefore less a story than an intense exchange between poetry, printmaking and modern myth.

Arrière-histoire du poème pulvérisé
Char, Rene · Stael, Nicolas de
Arrière-histoire du poème pulvérisé

*Arrière-histoire du poème pulvérisé* is a later illustrated edition of a key text in which René Char looks back on the genesis and inner background of *Le Poème pulvérisé*. Published in 1972 by Imprimerie Union, it opens with a colour frontispiece by Nicolas de Staël. The pairing of Char and de Staël is especially charged: two post-war voices, each seeking concentration, clarity, and rupture in his own medium. This copy is one of only six hors commerce copies on Arches and is signed. The autograph presentation inscription to Doctor Marcel Zara, with poetic quotation and October 1972 dating, makes it a deeply personal copy.

Derain, André
Amis & Amille. Mystère du XIVe siècle.

This sumptuously bound book brings a medieval mystery to life through a rare collaboration between ancient literature and modern illustration. The geometric box design on garnet morocco provides striking contrast. André Derain’s 22 color lithographs – including one double and three full-page – enhance the narrative with expressive visual force. Printed on Rives vellum in an edition of 180 numbered copies, this copy (No. 72) was made for Baroness Vaxelaire and includes a suite on fine Japanese paper. The binding by Lucie Weill exemplifies artisanal excellence. A harmonious blend of narrative tradition and graphic daring.

L'arbre descend du singe
Bédouin, Jean-Louis · Hallart, Guy
L'arbre descend du singe

L'Arbre descend du singe is a beautifully illustrated edition that highlights the collaboration between the poet Jean-Louis Bedouin and the artist Guy Hallart. The work, published in a limited edition, is characterized by a rich dialogue between poetry and image, where the visual compositions reflect the dreamy and often cryptic nature of Bedouin's texts. The book is a tangible testament to the artistic symbiosis between the two creators and offers a unique insight into a creative dialogue from the mid-1970s.

The Fragile Meaning of ‘Complet’

In auction descriptions, “complete” often sounds reassuring — but it is only meaningful when verified against the colophon, the justification, and the bibliography. For The Hidden Page, clarity begins where vague market language ends.
